River Hill Wine and Spirit's Select Barrel of Sagamore Rye: Complimentary Cocktail Recipes

River Hill Wine and Spirits has done it again. Krishna Patel has chosen a select batch of Sagamore Spirit Rye to sell exclusively at her store. It’s a 6 year aged straight 110 proof straight rye. It has notes of orange peel, spices and brown sugar. Rye whisky has historically been made right here in Maryland and our neighbors to the north, Pennsylvania. Made from a mash of majority rye gain, aged for a minimum of two years in new oak barrels, Rye is a very smooth whiskey.

This barrel select whiskey is smooth enough to drink on it’s own. Skip the rocks and drink this one neat to get the full robust flavor. I also found four great cocktails that compliment this whiskey perfectly. Most of these cocktails were adapted from recipes from Heaven Hills Distillery, made perfectly to go with this rye.

Boulevardier

1.25 oz. RYE WHISKEY

1 oz. CAMPARI®

1 oz. SWEET VERMOUTH

1 ORANGE TWIST

Add all the ingredients to a rocks glass filled with ice and stir to combine. Garnish with an orange twist. This is not a bitter not sweet cocktail but it highlights the orange peel notes.

Forbidden Sour

1 oz. RYE WHISKEY

1 oz. POMEGRANATE LIQUEUR

.5 oz. SIMPLE SYRUP

.5 oz. LEMON JUICE

Combine all ingredients in a mixing tin. Add ice and shake until well chilled. Fill a rocks glass with ice and strain cocktail into glass. Garnish with a lemon wedge. I cut back on the sugar from the original recipe due to the brown sugar undertones to this select barrel of rye. I love the way the pomegranate and rye blend together to make a great cocktail.

Kentucky Jewel

1 ½ oz. RYE WHISKEY

1 oz. PINEAPPLE JUICE

2 DASHES ANGOSTURA® BITTERS

6 MINT LEAVES

SPLASH OF SPARKLING WINE

Combine all ingredients except sparkling wine (the recipe called for champagne but I am never a fan of using real champagne in a cocktail so I used prosecco) and shake vigorously. Fine strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Top with sparkling wine. Garnish with a floating mint leaf.

Kentucky Mule

2 oz. RYE WHISKEY

3 oz. GINGER BEER

.5 oz. FRESH LIME JUICE

.5 oz. SIMPLE SYRUP

Slice OF LIME

Build over ice in your favorite mule mug. Garnish with lime. This is an excellent alternative to a Moscow Mule which is made from Vodka. The whiskey mellows out the ginger beer and for those who aren’t a fan of the traditional cocktail, like my husband, this version is smoother and more enjoyable.
