Winter Closet Staples: Women's Edition

Updated: Dec 17, 2020

Women, you are up on my winter closet staples recommendations. The men got to shine last week but now I have some suggestions for the gals. A little about my style before we dive into my recommendations. I have a serious multiple personality disorder when it comes to fashion. My fashion inspiration ranges from the outrageously over the top Anna Della Russo, fashion editor of Vogue Tokyo, to the classically chic and laid back Katie Holmes street style, to Hailey Bieber’s off duty model looks. While my personality is 100% Carrie Bradshaw, and my love of Manolo’s rival's hers, she’s not one of my style icons. I actually loved all of Miranda’s pantsuits and Samatha’s fitted below the knee length dresses. But if I could get away with dressing like Scarlett O’Hara everyday, I would. Have half of you are about to stop reading because you’re so confused about what’s going on in this post and whether or not you want any style recommendations from me. I know my taste can be extreme but I am going to stick with mostly classic staple items and then I will throw in a few trendy options, just in case. Here we go.

Coats

Wool Coat

I own this Daily Ritual wool coat and I am extremely happy with it’s fit, feel and versatility. I own the navy but I give my stamp of approval on every color. They’re all winter wardrobe perfect. If you want to be very on trend this season, a plaid wool coat is the way to go. This Classic Lattice Coat is a great option with fantastic reviews. You can go even further with this trend and stand out in this Evedesign plaid coat with tan and red details. Leopard is not yet dead but it is more subtle. Kensie has a navy based leopard wool coat that is just the thing for the woman who wants to stand out, only a little.

Teddy Bear Coat

These are all the rage from the runway to the street. I am in love with the coziness of my Rosemary Jacket from You.Stella and they’ve given my readers 25% off with the code: MANDIEB25. This style has a collar, pockets and a zipper. Lands’ End at Kohls has a button down and longer version. Amazon brand Daily Ritual has another version that’s an open lapel style.

Puffer Jacket

The cult Orolay coat is my absolute favorite casual winter coat. It’s so warm and has fun details. I have it in grey, red, and I just bought yellow because I’m extra like that. I also own the classic North Face parka coat and it has uses, as it’s packable and sporty. I do not find that it holds up to Maryland winters and is best in early and late winter. Lacquer puffer coats with a more intricate stitching made an appearance at the Nordstrom Anniversary sale this year like this Ellen Tracy with a faux fur hoodie.

Handbags

Classic Looks

On the higher end look at the Gucci Jackie Hobo, the Tory Burch Lee Radziwill, Fendi Chain Leather Bucket Bag, are trending. We can drop the price down with a simple and classic Kate Spade Satchel and even further with a Madewell Shoulder Bag. If you’re going to go lower try Amazon’s Classic Double Zip.

Mini Bag

By Far Mini Rachel bag is the perfect tiny bag being carried by off duty models, along with vintage Fendi Baguette. Longchamp Mini Le Pliage is another option in this category and the Marc Jacobs Softshot. Of course Amazon has a Retro Shoulder Bag and Top Handle Bag that are more affordable that have the same look.

Oversized Totes

The Telfar, if you can get one, it is the it bag of the moment! Mansur Gavriel Pillow Tote is an up and coming bag. Mulberry Oversized Tote has a fun look to it. Target has a nice Bolo Leather large tote that fits the bill as well. Easeu Oversized Handbag on Amazon is extremely affordable and will also do the trick.

Tops

White Button Down

This classing shirt is so versatile it should be in everyone’s closet. For a perfect but expensive version try the j.crew. But you can get a really good Treasure & Bond one for less at Nordstrom that is quite nice. The Amazon brand Daily Ritual version is a great option too but I do feel it wrinkles more than my more expensive one.

Sweaters

Halogen makes some really inexpensive, comfortable and beautiful cashmere sweaters. The crew neck and turtleneck are newer this season, but the v-neck I have loved for years. I own the staple colors: black, grey, and tan, but this year I bought some pops of color in royal blue, red, and salmon pink. An oversized sweater should definitely be in your wardrobe this season. This sweater tunic from Amazon has been all the rage and I think it lives up to its reputation. A wrap cardigan would be my choice for winter and not a long cardigan as the wrap can go over another sweater. Target has a nice neutral wrap at a fabulous price but the j.crew cashmere wrap in black has been on my wish list for awhile.

Pants

Jeans

There are three trends happening but I will also share my favorite skinny jean because I am not completely comfortable with the current trends on my body. The mom jean is all the rage, if you want to try this cheaply try the Lee version on Amazon or you could commit to a great brand like Kut. I admit I haven’t tried it but I feel like I would look ridiculous, but if you want to be super cool you’ll rock this 1980s look. Oh and it needs to be that light to mid blue color to really get it right. Bell bottom jeans are back too. These Sidefeel version on Amazon has amazing reviews. I have gone a little less bell bottom and a little more boot cut with this Frame pair from Nordstrom. You could meet in the middle with these 7 for All Mankinds or Lees. The Europeans are all wearing very light colored jeans and often very baggy these Lee Riders are affordable but size up for the true look. Kut has gotten it a little better and it’s one of my favorite brands. Ok for those of you who want to stick with the skinny jeans my top recommendations are the DL1961 Florence. The best price is usually on Amazon but they are out on a lot of sizes so you can try Zappos, Shopbop, or Nordstrom. The reason they’re selling out is because Megan Markle has been wearing them. A much less expensive skinny jean I like is the Signature Levi on Amazon. Lots of people love the Old Navy Rockstar as well.

Leggings

Leggings are here to stay...for now. On the faux leather front you’ve got the Spanx, I recommend sizing up if you want any sort of comfort. Commando, which actually looks like leather, and then there’s a cheaper and much more comfortable option on Amazon from Retro Gong and also CRZ Yoga which look a lot like the Spanx. Zella Live In are now the staple in plain black leggings. On Amazon I like Core 10, Dragon Fit, and 90 Degree Reflex. On the softer side, Leggings Depot makes a pair that feel as good as the LuLaRoe leggings. On a side note, the Leggings Depot Joggers are also super soft.

Shoes

Heels

I’m not going to go crazy here. I’ll give you one party look I love, one black and one nude. Mary Janes are back and in heel form SJP (Sarah Jessica Parker’s brand) has an absolutely stunning pair, size up!!! Look to DSW for a more budget friendly option from Lifestride. Nude heels are just something every woman should own because they go with everything. Block heels are the rage now and I love this ASOS pair. Forever 21 has a very affordable pair and this Fericzot on Amazon has a bit more height to it. Check out these cute ones from Nasty Gal As for your party shoe, it’s got to have chains this year. How fabulous are these Tom Ford chain ankle strap shoes? ASOS has this look in many colors, but I love the pink. Topshop is mixing all the seasonal looks with heeled sandals, mixed metals and chains. Walmart has some cute booties with chains, which would give you a little extra warmth. Could you just add a chain to shoes you already own? Heck yeah. Amazon has a few options. Here’s a luxe looking gold one or you could have some fun with a set.

White Sneakers

You need a pair. Here are some choices, at descending price points: Veja Esplar, Nike Air Force One, Adidas Stan Smith, Fila Disruptor, Superga Cotu, Converse Chuck Taylor, Keds Triple Kick. Pick your poison.

Winter Weather Boots

I’m just going to list some options that are currently on trend and you can decide what fits you best. Timberland Nubuk, Sorel Wedge, Sperry Topsider. I don’t think classic Hunter Boots, especially in the original matte green will go away, but the colored and shiny look isn’t as popular as it was in the last decade. Now the Hunter Refined Chelsea is the thing, the Standard Chelsea works as well. Also pink UGGs are in, so…

Here some Amazon dupes of these styles: hiking dupe, duck boots, chelsea boots, pink shearling boots

Here are Targets dupes: duck boots, hiking boots, chelsea boots.

Jewelry

Chain Trend

A thin, understated paper clip chain necklace is the must have item right now. Amazon has a faux gold version or you can spend more for a gold plated from Macys. We saw bulky silver bracelets on the runway this season too. Here’s an Amazon David Yurman Dupe or Saks has an amazing John Hardy one.

Rainbow Trend

Jewelry with lots of colors are on their way to taking over from gold and silver. They were all over the Spring 2021 runway shows and you could get a jump start and add a pop of color to your winter wardrobe with some colored jewelry. Try these crystal hoops from Amazon or these Swarovski ones from Saks. Here’s a multicolored initial pendant from Amazon or a larger Swarovski necklace I found on ETSY.

Butterfly Trend

Another Megan Markle inspired trend is the butterfly earring. If you believe Vogue, spring will bring a full on animal jewelry trend. Amazon has a silver crystal pair similar to the Duchesses. I’m eyeing the white gold and diamond pair that Walmart is promoting. Layered necklaces are also in, so here’s a layered faux gold butterfly necklace. If you’re a rose gold girl here’s a necklace on ETSY with cute side butterflies. You can mix and match your trends and go for this chain and butterfly combo necklace. Or you can mix your fancy shoes with butterflies and get a pair of Sophia Websters! So many options.

Well that’s all I’ve got in me at the moment. Remember this is not an exhaustive list but the top items I think are the perfect staples for your winter wardrobe and some things to that are a little more Carrie and a little less Charlotte. Please feel free to ask me specific questions or recommendations for things not on this list. Happy winter shopping.
